C^\infty smoothing for weak solutions of the inhomogeneous Landau equation

We consider the spatially inhomogeneous Landau equation with initial data that is bounded by a Gaussian in the velocity variable. In the case of moderately soft potentials, we show that weak solutions immediately become smooth and remain smooth as long as the mass, energy, and entropy densities remain under control. For very soft potentials, we obtain the same conclusion with the additional assumption that a sufficiently high moment of the solution in the velocity variable remains bounded. Age Estimation using Phalangeal Skeletochronology in Northern Crawfish Frogs, Lithobates areolatus circulosus (Amphibia: Anura: Ranidae), from Arkansas

As an obligate crayfish burrow dweller, crawfish frogs have historically occupied a relatively narrow ecological niche throughout their distribution in the tall grass prairies and grasslands of the central and south-central United States. In Arkansas, the Northern Crawfish Frog, Lithobates areolatus circulosus, occurs in only 19 of its 75 counties. Because of their secretive nature, late winter-early spring breeding season, and current protected status by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, this species remains a rarity in most museum collections in the state. Moreover, only anecdotal information exits regarding any aspect of their natural history in Arkansas. In the present study, we chose to conduct a phalangeal skeletochronological investigation using museum specimens (n = 9) deposited in the herpetological collection housed in the Arkansas Center for Biodiversity Collections located at Arkansas State University. Our results were mostly similar to the age-body length distributions from southern Illinois. Our oldest males exhibited 4 lines of arrested growth (LAGs), and this estimated age matched well with the body sizes of 4-year-old males found in Illinois. Two of our 3-year-old males had slightly larger body sizes compared to the Illinois sample. Our oldest female was 5 years old. Her body size was comparable to values found for 5-year-old females in Illinois. Also, 5 years was the maximum age recorded for this species in our study as well as for the frog in Illinois. Nine years has been reported as the maximum lifespan for this species

An Econometric Model for American Lobster

An econometric model for the wholesale and ex-vessel markets of American lobster, Homarus amedcanus, was developed to determine the market impact of proposed increases in the minimum size for American lobster. Prices were found to be inflexible with respect to landing, imports, and income (i.e., the price flexibilities were less than one) in both wholesale and ex-vessel markets. The size of lobster has a statistically significant effect on wholesale and ex-vessel prices and revenues. On average, wholesalers pass along 52% of any price changes to lobstermen. The ex-vessel price impact of a given change in supply is about the same as for changes in either landings or imports. Any changes in public policies leading to increases in total landings of American lobster and/or decreases in the proportion of small lobsters in the landings would result in increases in gross revenues to fishermen and wholesalers. My thesis show is sort of a mock manifesto on the ephemeral making of art, especially my art. Automatic drawing and collage are major themes and redundencies that continue to find their way into what I do. I will show the dualities between what is past and what is present hoping to find the integral ingredient that caused the past to be present. I will make the viewer question what he or she believes in. We all know that the reason for the present is because of the events in the past, but do the events of the past hold a certain tyranny over the way we live or did we choose the products, philosophies and laws that we live by? Again, by the usage of automatic drawing and collage, each image will find another question for the original question. I will not seek answers because only tangible sciences deserve to find facts; art is not necessarily tangible

Katrina\u27s crescendo

This thesis explores sculptures that are directly dependant on my life experience before, during and after Hurricane Katrina. This event has changed not only the way I look at life, but also the way I create art. Prior to the hurricane, my artwork was much more formalist. I tried to let the natural beauty of the material take front seat and rarely dealt with the conceptual side. Post Katrina, I find political undertones in just about everything I create. The storm has opened my eyes to the fact that nothing is neutral and that politics surround everything we do in America. I now feel that as an artist, it is my job to express my opinions through my artwork. The opinions that I have formed in order to bring me to these conclusions may not be agreeable to everyone, but I believe in them deeply. These feelings have created the first sense of emotional certainty I have felt since the onset of Hurricane Katrina

Generalized Koszul properties for augmented algebras

Under certain conditions, a filtration on an augmented algebra A admits a related filtration on the Yoneda algebra E(A) := Ext_A(K, K). We show that there exists a bigraded algebra monomorphism from gr E(A) to E_Gr(gr A), where E_Gr(gr A) is the graded Yoneda algebra of gr A. This monomorphism can be applied in the case where A is connected graded to determine that A has the K_2 property recently introduced by Cassidy and Shelton.Comment: 14 page

Analysis towards Effective Policing in Nigeria

Security of life and property is the bedrock of social, economic and political stability of any nation. Man as a unique creature with peculiar and complex nature could be instinctively unpredictable and uncontrollable. And this explains why humans are the major determinant and provider of security in a society. Governments of nations are therefore saddled with the responsibility of internal security through established agencies empowered by law. This duty is distilled into standard policing to enforce law and order in the wake of a secured/safe environment. The standard of policing available to nation determines the level of development of that country. Unfortunately, the Nigeria police has not been able to live up to expectation in providing adequate security to the nation. In carrying out the research, the secondary source of information and data was utilized. The findings reveal that several factors are responsible for police inefficiency and ineffectiveness, which include corruption, poor funding by government and lack of confidence by the general public. The paper recommended some important strategies for effective policing which includes re-orientation of the police, proper training, provision of firearms, motivation and public responsibility
